The Williamsburg Art neXus (WAX) has certainly lived up to its name. Since opening in 1999 as a noncurated theater space for dance under the direction of Marissa Beatty, Brian Brooks, Melissa Rodnon, and David Tirosh, all performing artists, it has become the de facto community dance hub.
I dont like dance theaterthe superficial melodrama that is steeped in pretension, the forceful cramming of music, theater, dance, and text into one piece that doesnt allow any one element to have any true artistic weight.
The New York dance world is changing. Anna Kisselgoff, chief dance critic for The New York Times, steps down after 36 years (count ’em, 36!). John Rockwell, former chief rock critic for the Times, will now assume this position of power. The Williamsburg Art neXus (WAX) closes its doors with hopes for a new space in their WAX: Phase II project.
