The collaborative element of printmaking challenges and excites me. Working with ULAE, I can bring my entrenched painting habits and procedures into the studio and have them shaken by the loss of control that collaboration presents. Ostensibly I am always looking to impose elements of chance into my painting process, so it is illuminating to face discomfort in actually removing my hand from the process. It makes suspect all of the grooves I might fall back upon in my paintings: I am more controlling than I think! I haven’t resolved this discomfort. So, it makes working at ULAE continually an education, how the collaboration, as well as the weight, speed, and unfamiliar mechanics of the physical processes present real surprises to react to.
