The unofficial “Mayor of the East Village” is arguably the Mayor of Free Jazz; as a collaborator and bandleader, he is the literal connection between Cecil Taylor, Matthew Shipp, Cooper-Moore, Susie Ibarra, Leena Conquest, Amiri Baraka, and many, many others.

Tiwaline is primarily beat orientated, with percussion usually to the fore, a bass thrum acting like a magnified frame drum interior. She often chooses a portentous mood-construction, with swirling soundscapes, sometimes scattered with metal percussion, or marimba sounds, perhaps with a wooden flute swirling to evoke a desert trance state.

Hanging On with Don Giovanni Records

To stand apart from the herd, a label has to be a bit different while remaining a reflection of the community it’s supporting. That’s what New Brunswick, NJ-based Don Giovanni Records has been doing ever since Joe Steinhardt and Zach Gajewski founded the label while attending Boston University back in 2003.

Hindsight

And so this is Christmas, and what have you done? If you're like a lot of people, very little. Or less than you'd hoped. Or it's hard to remember. Or all three.
