PROPHET: The Order of the Lyricist

PROPHET: The Order of the Lyricist by 7NMS, the duo made up of choreographer/dancer Marjani Forté-Saunders and composer Everett Saunders, is an invitation to an exclusive listening party of sorts.

Accumulation

Trisha Brown’s Accumulation is set to the Grateful Dead’s “Uncle John’s Band,” a song that itself is expressly referential to its bluegrass and Americana influences. This piece, along with two (Spanish Dance, 1973 and Line Up, 1976) set to Bob Dylan’s version of the Gordon Lightfoot tune “Early Mornin’ Rain,” stands stark against the rest of Brown’s early work of the 1960s and ’70s: a silent, site-specific era.

VESSEL: Seeing Double

Two writers wade into the hazy environment of David Thomson’s new work to grapple with opacity and transparency, the magical and mundane. Where one sees an M, the other sees a W, yet both come away with a sense of intimacy in the unknown.

Half a Dozen Fresh Baked Dances

Named for the patisserie that once inhabited the 1920s-era building, Art Cake has taken the gallery aesthetic to the extreme with white floors, white curtains, white track lighting. Though seemingly designed for visual rather than performing arts (the floor is cement), this year’s second ever Dance Series featuring six artists showed its potential as a home for experimental dance.
