By Javier A. Román-NievesPlayuela es uno de los pocos terrenos en el extremo noreste de Puerto Rico que aún quedan sin desarrollar. Sobre dunas de arena cementada y piedra caliza, el agua ha tallado un paisaje inconfundible de playas aisladas, en su mayoría rocosas, que bordean un valle costero de pastizales salpicados de palmeras. El paisaje, que una vez fue densamente cultivado, actualmente se ubica sobre un fondo de bosques costeros secundarios que rodean laderas kársticas y cavernosas.
