A Festival Grows in Brooklyn: Celebrate Brooklyn Turns 25

Celebrate Brooklyn, the outdoor summer festival that features music, dance, film, and spoken word. Marking its 25th anniversary, Celebrate Brooklyn—which now attracts 200,000 spectators each year—kicks off with a gala on June 12.

Farewell to Forsythe’s

Ballett Frankfurt Dancers of William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt arced, angled, and whipped about the opera house stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music earlier this fall (October). At times they seemed to erupt in Terets-like dance passages. And though Forsythe’s densely complex movement style has a contemporary sensibility, ballet is always a shimmering, elusive presence.

Dancing in the Real World

The 12-story grain terminal in Red Hook has witnessed the rise and fall of shipping and manufacturing industries in Brooklyn, and the passing of countless waves of immigrants. It has seen just about everything, but until last summer it had never seen thirty rows of folding chairs and an usher.

DanceBrazil’s Camará

DanceBrazil’s exuberant performance at the Celebrate Brooklyn Festival in mid-July confirmed its place as one of the leading professional folk dance companies in the nation. Through its mixture of the traditional and contemporary, DanceBrazil, founded by Jelon Vieira, has acted as ambassador for Afro-Brazilian culture for over twenty-five years.
